Hello shipmates! Had a lovely trip to the San Juans during the last week of 2009. It started out with a nice motor from Port Madison on Bainbridge Island to Port Townsend. My brother Todd and his son Maxwell joined me for the journey. I got a kick out of seeing 10 year old Maxwell sitting cozy by the propane fire watching Tom and Jerry cartoons on the flat screen! That boy had it all figured out right from the start.
My solo trip from Port Townsend to Watmough Bay on Lopez Island was a wonderful broad reach with three sails flying! It was just a kick sailing and gunkholing through the San Juans with only one or two other boats sighted. I had Jones Island practically all to myself!
It was quite an adventure on New Year's Day with 25-30 knot winds blowing out of the SE. My attempt to motor through Cattle Pass was met with steep waves as the ebb current faced the strong southerly. I eventually gave up the fight and surfed with my tail between my legs back to the moorage at Friday Harbor. Not so bad watching some bowl games and having a few pints is it? I was extremely please with the beautiful handling and secure feeling of the Cape George. As Cecil told me, "she'll never pound". Right on Cecil....right on!
The next day was much smoother as I motored past Smith and Minor Islands on my way back to Port Townsend. I had the pleasure of meeting the new owner of CG 31, "Infinity" as she was docked just a couple of slips from me at the Point Hudson Marina. I know they're really going to love that beautiful boat!
All in all, I felt like a got away with one just to be able to experience the San Juans in Winter! I've just posted a couple of nice pictures from the trip.
Enjoy!
